How Technology is Helping Us Understand the Quran — But Also Taking Us Away From It

The digital age has made the Quran more accessible than ever before. With just a few taps, we can access translations, Tafseer, audio recitations, and video lectures. However, while technology is a powerful tool, it can also become a source of distraction and disconnection from the very message it helps deliver.

Technology as a Blessing for Quranic Learning

Allah (SWT) says:

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيۡبَۛ فِيهِۛ هُدٗى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2

Today, technology allows this guidance to reach homes and hearts across the globe:

  • Quran apps with recitations and translations
  • Tafsir websites in multiple languages
  • Video lessons on Tajweed and Arabic grammar
  • AI-powered tools for memorization and learning
  • Digital Mushafs with audio and notes

But We Are Also Getting Distracted

Sadly, the same devices we use for Quranic learning are also filled with distractions: endless scrolling, notifications, and digital noise.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned:

“Among the signs of the Hour is that knowledge will be taken away…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 80)

This doesn’t mean books will vanish, but attention to knowledge will disappear. We open a Quran app but get lost in Instagram reels. We plan to study Tafseer but end up watching unrelated content.

The Quran Speaks of Distraction

Allah (SWT) says:

أَلۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ • حَتَّىٰ زُرۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَقَابِرَ
“Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you, until you visit the graveyards.”
Surah At-Takathur 102:1–2

The very excess that technology enables — likes, followers, content overload — is a spiritual test.

Tips to Use Tech for Quran — Not Against It

  1. Turn Off Notifications when reading the Quran
  2. Use Dedicated Quran Apps like Tanzil.net or Quran.com
  3. Set Daily Quran Time without distractions
  4. Watch One Tafsir Video instead of binge-watching unrelated reels
  5. Join a Live Class with others to stay committed

Conclusion

Technology is not the enemy — distraction is. When used wisely, modern tools can bring us closer to Allah’s words. But if we’re not careful, we risk scrolling past our spiritual purpose.

إِنَّ هَٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡآنَ يَهۡدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقۡوَمُ
“Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable…”
Surah Al-Isra 17:9

Let’s use technology as a means, not a master.
